H.E. Amb. Makarim Wibisono

Former Ambassador, Permanent
Representative of Indonesia to the U.N.

Makarim Wibisono is the former Permanent Representative of Indonesia to the United Nations. He served concurrently as Indonesia's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary accredited to Guatemala, Nicaragua, Jamaica and the Bahamas. Amb. Wibisono worked for Indonesia's Department of Foreign Affairs since 1972 and for its Permanent Mission to the UN beginning in 1991, serving as Indonesia's Permanent Representative since 1997.

 He has also been Chairman of the Working Group of Non-Aligned Countries on Disarmament. He was appointed Vice-President of ECOSOC in 1999 and President of ECOSOC in 2000.
Throughout his distinguished career, Amb. Wibisono served on numerous international task forces and
working groups in the areas of disarmament, nuclear non-proliferation, development, poverty and human rights, where he has consistently championed the cause of non-aligned nations.  He received a M.A. degree from the Paul Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University and a Ph.D. from Ohio State University.

The 2010 Global Peace Festival will provide an international platform to highlight innovative, soft-power responses to conflict in the twenty-first century.
