Madhav Kumar Nepal is the current Prime Minister of Nepal; he took office on May 25, 2009. He had been the General Secretary of Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) for 15 years. He is known in Nepal as MaKuNe short for Madhav Kumar Nepal.

M.K. Nepal joined the communist movement in 1969. In 1971 he became a district committee member of the Nepal Revolutionary Organisation (Marxist-Leninist) and four years later was elected to the All Nepal Communist Revolutionary Coordination Committee (Marxist-Leninist). When the Communist Party of Nepal (Marxist-Leninist) was founded in 1978, M.K. Nepal was elected to its politburo. He served as leader of the main opposition both in National Assembly and House of Representatives. He had become Minister for Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister on 1994. He also served as Chairman of the Constitutional Committee.
Before being named Prime Minister, M.K. Nepal was the Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the opposition in the National Assembly. He proposed that the Nepal Civil War should be solved through talks and not by mobilizing armed forces.
Rt. Hon. Madhav Kumar Nepal was born on 6th March 1953.
